Europe's Largest Onshore Windfarm Begins Operation in Portugal

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Empreendimento Eolico do Vale do Minho S.A. (EEVM) (Braga, Portugal) has begun commercial operation of Europe's largest onshore windfarm, the 240-megawatt (MW) Ventominho Windfarm, in northwestern Portugal. The $465 million facility began construction in January 2007.

The windfarm is equipped with 120 2-MW E82 model wind turbine generators supplied by the German manufacturer company Enercon GmbH (Aurich, Germany), the third largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world. Phase I was inaugurated in April 2008, when the company commissioned 76 wind turbines. The plant went into full production in November. The windfarm comprises five interconnected sub-farms across 30 kilometers with a single point of connection to the country's national grid through a 150-kilovolt transmission line.

EEVM was created as a joint venture to build and operate windfarms in the Portuguese region of Vale do Minho. EDF Energies Nouvelles Group (EPA:EEN) (Paris) controls 85% of EEVM, and Endesa SA (MCE:ELE) (Madrid, Spain) holds 15%.
