Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Exelon Generation Company LLC a division of Exelon Corporation (NYSE: EXC) (Chicago, Illinois) is testing the Mystic and the Fore River Power Stations expansion. The Mystic Power Station Project, located in Everett, Massachusetts, on a 17-acre site is a 1,600-megawatt (MW) expansion of the existing 1,085 MW Mystic Power Station. The Mystic expansion will be called Mystic 8 & 9 Generating Station combined-cycle electric power plant. The Fore River Generating Station is an 800 MW expansion of the retired 57-acre site of the Edgar Station that still has two oil-fired 12 MW combustion turbine/generators (CT's).
Fore River 1 and Mystic 8 & 9 are all combined-cycle units each consisting of two 245-megawatt (MW) MHI W501G (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) natural gas/oil-fired CT's with Dry Low NOx combustors & CO catalysts, paired with two Deltak heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) that has superheat, reheat, duct-fired burners and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) units and one MHI steam turbine generator. Unit 8 came online in the middle of January; Unit 9 is scheduled for operation in April 2003 and Fore River for May 2003. The total capacity of the new units is approximately 2,400MW.
Exelon Generation Company LLC (Kenneth Square, Pennsylvania), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation had acquired these and other plants from Sithe New England Holdings LLC in November 2002 who had acquired them from Boston Electric Company in conjunction of Massachusetts's deregulation. The construction of Mystic 8 & 9 and Fore River is one of the largest expansions and environmentally friendly projects that have been taken on in the United States.
Turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services are provided by Washington Group International (Boise, Idaho). The company was formed in July 2000, by Morrison Knudsen Corporation's acquisition of Raytheon Engineers & Constructors.
