ExxonMobil Chemical Company (Baton Rouge, Louisiana), a subsidiary of ExxonMobil Corporation (NYSE: XOM) (Irving, Texas), has begun construction of an expansion that will add 90,000 metric tons per year of new ethylene elastomer capacity at its Baton Rouge chemical plant.
Since Industrialinfo.com first reported this project in May of 2001, Mitsui & Company USA Incorporated (Houston, Texas) has been selected as the engineering and construction contractor for this project. The expansion will include the implementation of Metallocene Catalyst Technology to produce EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber and other polymers. This project is expected to double ExxonMobil's ethylene elastomer capacity to approximately 180,000 metric tons per year when completed in the summer of 2003.
