Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)-- Finnish energy utility Fortum Oyj (HEL: FUM1V) (Espoo, Finland) have joined hands with the French marine engineering company Direction des Constructions Navales (DCNS) (Paris) to develop 1.5-megawatt (MW) wave power plant off the coast of Bretagne in the Western France. Due to be completed by the end of 2015 the wave-roller demonstration project will be the first of its kind in France.
In 2013, Fortum and AW Energy Oy (Vantaa, Finland) entered into a pact with DCNS for collaborative efforts in the field of wave energy research and development. As part of the agreement, Fortum is responsible for the project development and will be the owner of the demonstration park, while DCNS will manage the site development and construction work. Finnish engineering-firm AW-Energy will supply its trademark Waveroller panels rated between 500-kilowatt (kV) to 1000kV to this wave power plant. The total investment for the project has been estimated at 9 million.
Wave-roller panel moves and absorbs energy from ocean waves. The hydraulic piston pumps attached to the panel pushes fluid inside a closed hydraulic circuit. The high-pressure fluid form the circuit is thrown into a hydraulic turbine that drives an electric generator. All the elements of the hydraulic circuit are enclosed in a hermetic structure to secure risk of leakage of the fluid into the ocean. The electrical energy generated from the individual panel units are connected to the electric grid via a subsea cable.
Fortum Oyj, founded in 1998, is a Finnish energy company involved in generation of electricity from hydro, thermal, nuclear and renewable energy sources in the Nordic and Baltic countries, Poland and Russia. The company is also developing world's largest wave-power project in Spain.
DCNS is a naval defense company headquartered in Paris. DCNS designs and builds submarines and surface combatants along with the associated systems and infrastructure and also offers a range of services to French naval bases and shipyards.
