First Four Power Blocks Completed at Duke Power Station in South Carolina

Duke Power Company, a business unit of Duke Energy Corporation (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina), has reached commercial startup of four combustion turbine generators at the Mill Creek Combustion Turbine Station near Blacksburg, South Carolina. Construction of the 640 megawatt (MW) peaking station began in May of 2002 and is expected to reach full commercial start up by late May.

Duke/Fluor Daniel, an affiliate of Duke Energy, provided plant design work, and is constructing the plant. The Mill Creek Station will consist of eight 80MW General Electric (GE) MS7001EA natural gas and distillate oil fired combustion turbine generator sets utilizing Mee Industries inlet air fogging systems and will supply power to the grid during times of peak usage. This $300 million plant will be the newest addition to the Duke Power fleet of generating stations.

Duke Power supplies over two million customers with electricity in North Carolina and South Carolina. The company generates over 19,300 MW from eight coal-fired, three nuclear, 31 hydroelectric stations, and operates combustion turbine generators at several sites. Coal-fired stations generate over half of the power supplied to Duke Power's customers.
