Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A prototype model of South Korea's first domestically-developed gas turbine, which is installed at the Gimpo Combined Heat and Power Plant owned by Korea Western Power, has been ignited for the first time. If the demonstration operation is completed, South Korea will be the world's fifth country with gas-turbine technology for power generation, following the United States, Japan, Germany and Italy.
The 270-megawatt (MW) gas turbine, which was developed by Doosan Enerbility (formerly Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction), was installed in the Gimpo cogeneration plant in April of last year.
This establishes a demonstration opportunity for gas turbines manufactured with domestic technology in South Korea's power generation market. All 160 gas turbines currently installed for power generation are foreign.
Korea Western Power plans to start commercial operation in July after a comprehensive trial run, followed by demonstration operation by 2025.
