Food and Beverage Industry Spending Near $1.2 Billion in the Carolinas

Plans for capital spending at food and beverage manufacturing and distribution sites located in North Carolina and South Carolina are showing a robust $1 billion.

Released Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Plans for capital spending at food and beverage manufacturing and distribution sites located in North Carolina and South Carolina are showing a robust $1 billion. However, the bulk of planned project activity falls on the northern side of the two states. Industrial Info has identified close to 50 active projects that are currently in the planning stage or early phase of construction within the Carolinas. Project expenditures range in value from $500,000 and to $200 million.

North Carolina is home to more than 200 major food and beverage facilities that employ close to 56,000 workers. North Carolina is on tap for more than $1.2 billion in project spending that will come from more than 35 projects, including plans for seven new facilities. Notable among the list of projects is the plan to build a $175 million craft beer brewery in Asheville, with construction slated to start in the first quarter of 2013.

Figures for South Carolina show a much smaller area of activity in terms of the number of operating plants, as well as the number and value of projects. There are fewer than 75 manufacturing and distribution facilities in the state, and the current project outlook shows expansions and upgrades but does not include plans for any new plants. Planned activity points to $245 million in expenditures from a dozen projects. A $130 million expansion of a pet foot plant in Columbia is the largest project on record. The plant is under construction and scheduled to be completed next spring.

The food and beverage industry across the U.S., including the Carolinas, has more than $14.5 billion in construction activity that is spread across 900 capital and maintenance projects.
