Fossil Fuel Service Companies Blowing into Wind Power

Recently we have seen the Power Industry focus on renewable energy sectors, with several contractors involved largely in windfarm construction.

Released Monday, May 11, 2009

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Recently, the Power Industry has focused on developing renewable energy projects especially wind power. There are several contractors that specialize in windfarm construction. Companies such as D.H. Blattener (St. Cloud, Minnesota), Mortensen Construction (Minneapolis, Minnesota) and White Construction (Clinton, Indiana) led the charge and were soon joined by others, including Wanzek Construction (Fargo, North Dakota) and RMT Incorporated (Madison, Wisconsin) in the construction of these green energy projects.

Engineering, construction and operations companies that were once primarily fossil fuel or nuclear related are taking steps to offer windfarm expertise. NAES Corporation (Issaquah, Washington) has brought its skills of operations and maintenance in fossil fuel power plants and applied it to windfarms. Wood Group Renewable Energy Services (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of the Wood Group (LSE:WG) (Aberdeen, Scotland), is utilizing its specialized services in the construction, operation and maintenance of gas turbine facilities in the wind sector, and as recently as mid-April. Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) will possibly make the move into windfarm construction. Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR) (Houston), which specializes in networking and infrastructure to the gas, electrical, and communications industries, has been servicing the infrastructure needs of the windfarm industry for over a decade, but has recently increased its services and focus to meet the increasing demand in the wind industry.

About 1,878 megawatts (MW) of wind power has started commercial operation in the U.S. so far in 2009, and more than 4,400 MW of wind generation is under construction. With an additional 95,000 MW under development it is easy to see why more and more companies are moving into the wind industry.
