France Lays Out Ambitious Offshore Wind Target, an Industrial Info Market Brief

France's National Energy and Climate Plan 2030 aims for 33% of renewable energy in its energy mix by 2030. The plan sounds ambitious, but it is realistic if France is able to tap the nation's offshore wind energy potential.

According to France's updated energy doctrine, 8.75 gigawatts (GW) of offshore capacity will be made available through tenders from 2020 to 2028. The procurement process will start from this year with a 1-GW offshore windfarm in Manche Est Mer du Nord. Another 500 to 1,000 megawatts (MW) of capacity is expected to be floated in the years 2021-2022 for the South Atlantic area. France also plans to float a tender of 1 GW for a fixed-bottom wind turbines project in 2023. From 2024 onward, France will tender 1 GW per year of either fixed-bottom or floating wind energy capacity, depending on the cost.
