Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Galp Energia SGPS SA (ELI:GALP) (Lisboa, Portugal) is continuing with the construction of new processing units at its 96,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Porto refinery (Matosinhos, Portugal).

The company began with the refinery conversion project in early 2007, and in 2008 Galp Energia selected Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) to perform design work at the Portugal refinery. For more details, view related April 3, 2009, article - Galp Energia Group Selects Engineering Firms to perform FEED for Conversion Projects in Portugal.

By the end of 2008, the refinery also selected Fluor Corporation to perform the engineering, procurement and construction, which involves the construction of a 17,000-BBL/d Visbreaker, a 54,000-BBL/d Vacuum, a Sour Water Stripper No. 2, and a 27-ton-per-day Sulfur Recovery unit. The project also includes upgrades of the 70,700-BBL/d Atmospheric Distillation 2 by increasing capacity 20% and the 25,000-BBL/d Gasoil Hydrodesulfurization Unit 2 by increasing capacity 25%.

Construction began in November 2008 and is currently under the mechanical construction, and the completion date is set for the fourth quarter of 2011.

The refinery is also building an 82-megawatt power house by installing two General Electric natural gas-fired turbine generators to supply the refinery and produce steam for internal use. The EPC project is being handled by the consortium between EFACEF and ENSUL MECI. The construction is scheduled to begin by the fourth quarter of 2009 and is expected to be complete by March 2011.
