General Contract Awarded for CNNC's Jiyang Nuclear Power Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A general contract for the Anhui Jiyang nuclear power project has been signed in the feasibility study stage by CNNC Third Qinshan Nuclear Power Company Limited (Haiyan, Zhejiang), a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (Beijing), and China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (Beijing).

The project is located at the south bank of the Yangtze River in Dongzhi County of Chizhou City, Anhui province, and is the second nuclear power site planned in Anhui province. It will have four 1,000-megawatt (MW) nuclear power units in two stages with a total investment of more than $5.8 billion. The Nuclear Power Office of Anhui, along with research institutes including the Chinese Academy of Science and Shanghai Nuclear Power Design & Research Institute. The agencies have been working on selecting a site since 1995. In July 2006, CNNC signed a cooperative agreement to jointly develop the Jiyang project in Anhui with the government of Chizhou City. Later that year, CNNC established a preparation office for the project, under the management of CNNC Third Qinshan. In September 2007, CNNC and the Development and Reform Commission of Anhui submitted a project proposal for Phase I to the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), where it awaits approval.

In order to accelerate preparations, CNNC General Manager Kang Rixin held talks with the government of Chizhou City in early November and decided to set up the project company Jiyang Nuclear Power Company by the end of the year. The signing of the general contract will further promote preparations of the project. According to the initial plan, the project will begin commercial operation in 2015.
