Germany Returns to Coal in Face of Energy Supply Crunch

At the end of June, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government gave the green light to restart 27 coal-fired power plants until March 2024. The price of coal is now five times higher than normal as European countries try to secure energy supply for winter. Power generation using coal has shot up more than 20% in Germany.

Germany is arguing that coal can help ease energy shortages over the next two winters and should not increase overall emissions beyond the Europe-wide cap or endanger Germany's climate targets.
