Hawaii Could Get 72.7% Increase in Power Generation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are planning to add about 1,654 megawatts (MW) on the Hawaiian Islands. This is an increase of more than 72.7% from the state's current operational generation capacity of about 2,277 MW from 16 plants. The addition would increase capacity to more than 3,900 MW. Because of transmission constraints, each island needs enough generation to enable it to be self-reliant, so there will not be many opportunities for energy to be brought in from other islands.

The proposed generation would be at 17 sites throughout the islands between now and 2017. The projects will use various technologies all utilizing renewable energy. There will be about 521 MW of thermal generation utilizing renewable fuels (biodiesel, biomass, landfill gas, waste and waste heat) to drive steam turbine/generators and combustion turbine/generators varying in size from 1 MW to 121 MW. The remaining generation that is proposed (1,134 MW) will use hydroelectric, solar, tidal and wind sources. Wind energy will provide the largest chunk of energy generation with 724 MW. Tidal and hydroelectricity each will contribute about 100 MW, and commercial solar has a 10 MW project under development.
