Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China has a vast potential for wind energy development and ranks fourth in the world for wind power use, behind the United States, Germany and Spain. Onshore wind power development has the potential to exceed 250 gigawatts (GW) in China.
By the end of 2009, China had about 25 GW of total installed wind power capacity. After China's 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10) allotted $2.5 billion for renewable energy projects, wind power has been gaining popularity. China may see another 6 GW in wind power added to regional grids by the end of 2012, with additional funds allocated in the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-15).
In 2005, China implemented its Renewable Energy Law and expanded upon this with Vision 2020, a plan to increase the installed capacity of renewable energy. Wind power alone is anticipated to reach 150 GW by 2020. China is already a wind power leader in Asia, but it will have to step up its game considerably to meet its ambitious goals by 2020.
HECIC New Energy Company Limited, a subsidiary of Hebei Construction and Investment Group Company Limited (Shijiazhuang, China), is constructing new windfarms as part of Vision 2020 and China's 11th Five-Year Plan. The company, which deals in renewable and sustainable energy, has 26 windfarms in Hebei Province, providing more than 1 GW of total installed wind power capacity.
HECIC, in association with General Electric Company's (NYSE:GE) (GE) offices in Shenyang, China, is planning to build several windfarms in Hebei with a total investment of $228 million. HECIC received approval from the local government in January to construct windfarms near Zhangjiakou, about 150 kilometers north of Beijing. In October, GE was appointed the design-build firm for the projects. The 50-megawatt windfarms are expected to begin construction by the end of this year and are scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2011.
