Heidtman Steel Capitalizes on Steel Processing Upswing

Take for example Heidtman Steel Products Incorporated (Toledo, Ohio), which is increasing capacity and building plants for new customers.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Demand for steel is up, prices have been solid, steel mills are experiencing good profits and are spending money on global consolidation and reinvesting profits in capacity expansions and modernizations. All of this is good news for the downstream steel processing and finishing sector, which is experiencing increased business and growth.

Take for example Heidtman Steel Products Incorporated (Toledo, Ohio), which is increasing capacity and building plants for new customers. Construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year on a steel processing plant adjacent to SeverCorr’s new steel mill complex in Columbus, Mississippi. Like other Heidtman plants, the Columbus plant is being constructed adjacent to the mill in order to take advantage of site synergies, reducing logistical/transportation costs associated with having the steel processed at an out of county or state tolling facility.

Heidtman operates sixteen plants processing and finishing about 5 million tons of steel annually. All of the company’s operational plants are located in the Great Lakes Region. The Columbus plant will be the company’s first plant outside of the Great Lakes Region.

The next project for the company and certainly its most ambitious to date involves construction of a $225 million continuous steel annealing line at a yet to be selected site in the U.S. The company is negotiating with several large mills to locate the plant with leading sites in Indiana, Ohio and Michigan, in addition to sites in the south being considered. The continuous annealing line will process about 500,000 tons per year of high strength steel for the automotive industry.
