Houston Wrinkle Reducer Isolagen Smoothes Way to Pennsylvania and Switzerland for New Manufacturing Plants

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Biopharmaceutical manufacturer Isolagen Incorporated (AMEX:ILE) (Houston, Texas) is moving confidently forward with an ambitious facility plan as their lead product candidate - a wrinkle reducing treatment - undergoes Phase III clinical development in the U.S. The company's long awaited decision for a new headquarters and domestic cell processing facility was recently revealed when they announced the choice of Exton, Pennsylvania, over Houston and Dallas.

Isolagen developed the patented autologous (a patient's own cells) living cell therapy, or ACS. Briefly, the process involves extracting the patient's own collagen-producing cells (dermal fibroblasts), growing them in a controlled environment and then injecting them back into the patient's face. The Exton site will process the company's skin treatment, which has applications in cosmetic dermatology to correct and reduce the normal effects of aging, such as wrinkles and laugh lines, and all types of depressed scars.

However, Houston was grateful that Isolagen decided to retain their local research operations. In February of this year, the company moved to leased-lab space on the Sam Houston Parkway, which performs cell biology research and early assessment for new indications.

With domestic operations in place, Isolagen has now gone on to purchase a 100,000 square-foot, two-building five-acre site in Bevaix, Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland for $10 million. The new site will supply customers in Continental Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Pacific Rim. Isolagen is expected to spend a total of $25 million upon completion of necessary renovation and equipment installation at the former microelectronics plant. The Swiss government offered the company financial incentives in the form of grants, coupled with a generous tax-free status period.

With late 2006 as the targeted open date, Isolagen will initially renovate one 70,000 square-foot building on the Bevaix site to accommodate their proprietary cell processing technology as well as house regional executive offices. While the site's other building is currently under a five-year lease, the company has estimated that the campus could eventually be expanded to 400,000 square-feet as demand warrants.
