Huadian Xiangfang Power Plant Phase II Project Fully in Operation

The sixth unit of Huadian Xiangfang Power Plant Phase II Project passed the 168-hour full load commissioning test successfully on May 23, 2007. This is the second 600 MW unit put into operation this year after the first 600 MW unit was put into operation on January 25, 200. Phase II of Xiangfang Power Plant has been fully completed in 24 months as scheduled.

Editor’s note: A 168-hour full load test is a performance test carried out before unit can be put into official operation. The unit shall be able to operate continuously at full load for at least 168 hours without shutdown.

As a subsidiary of China Huadian Corporation, Xiangfang Power Plant is located at the south of Xiangfang city in Central China’s Hubei province. Four 300 MW units in the first phase of the project were put into operation in September 25, 1999. Xiangfang Power Plant’s Phase II received official approval from the National Development and Reform Commission (DNRC) on September 15, 2005. Construction for Phase II started on May 28, 2005; the project owner and all parties involved in the construction adopted an innovative construction scheme the first time in China, which is to install 600 MW units in a powerhouse initially designed for 300 MW units.

The project has experienced many difficulties such as late delivery of key equipment and the impact of seasonal weather during the construction. The first unit was put into synchronized operation on December 26, 2006 and was handed over to the owner on January 25, 2007; the overall startup test for unit 2 started on April 30, 2007, and the first synchronization was successfully carried out on May 1, 2007. It passed the 168-hour full load commissioning successfully on May 23, 2007.

During the 168-hour full load commissioning, the rate of thermal automation in use reached 98.15% and the rate of protection device in use reached 100%. All major indicators during the commissioning are of excellent standard.
