As one of the thirteen large-scale coal bases and one of the six coal-fired power bases in China, the city of Huainan is accelerating the construction of a new type of coal power base by implementing the strategy of driven key projects based on its advantages in resources.
Based on the construction requirement for modern new type of mines, the city carried out technical and equipment renovations on seven pairs of existing mines in 2006, and accelerated the construction of six pairs of new mines with total production capacity more than 40 million tons. Presently, the 10 million ton per annum Guqiao Mine as well as a coal preparation plant has been completed, Zhangji Coal Mines Phase II Project has been put into operation, the Liuzhuang coal mine has been put into trial production, and the remaining three mines will also be put into operation within this year. Another seven new mining projects, including the Pansan Deep Mine, Luoyuan Mine and Zhangou Mine have been approved by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and have been included in the overall planning. Six hundred thirty two million dollars has been invested into coal mining projects in the city since 2006. The coal mining industry of the city is keeping on track with sound and swift development.
In the respect to power construction projects, there are nineteen projects with a total installation capacity of 22,044 MW. Among them, are four projects in operation, five under construction, four ready to start construction and six in pre-stage preparation. For the five projects currently under construction, the total installation capacity is 7,224 MW with a $3.7 billion total investment. Six 600 MW units, two each in the Pingwei Power Plant (Phase II), the Tianji Power Plant (Phase I) and the Luohe Power Plant (Phase III), are expected to be put into operation by the end of this year.
