India Aims to Add 18 GW of Hydropower by 2032
New draft guidelines from India's Union Ministry of Power call for 18 gigawatts (GW) of pumped-storage hydropower (PHP) generation to meet peak power demand by 2032

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--New draft guidelines from India's Union Ministry of Power (New Delhi) call for 18 gigawatts (GW) of pumped-storage hydropower (PHP) generation to meet peak power demand by 2032. India's pubic-sector utilities, like NHPC Limited (Faridabad), SJVN (Shimla), THDC India Limited (Rishikesh) and NTPC Limited (New Delhi), are slated to develop these projects.
India has a total pumped-storage potential of 103 GW, according to government studies. The National Electricity Plan (NEP) published by India's Central Electricity Authority says 18 GW of pumped-storage projects are required to integrate the planned renewable energy capacity until 2032. Pumped-storage projects provide the necessary scale of storage at a lower cost, with domestically available technology and no reliance on international supply chains.
Recently, Rewa Ultra Mega Solar (RUMSL), a joint venture between Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam (MPUVN) and Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), initiated a request for proposal (RFP) to select a developer for pumped-storage projects totaling 13.8 GW. These projects would be distributed across various sites in the state of Madhya Pradesh, varying from 600 MW to 2 GW.
