Indiana Power Generation Developers Look Hard at Renewable Energy

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indiana currently has more than 28,850 megawatts (MW) of operational power generation capacity, of which 220 MW, or 0.76%, is renewable energy. The operational generation capacity of renewable energy is primarily made up of wind and hydroelectric sources with a small amount of landfill gas and municipal solid waste.

Developers are looking to add approximately 5,400 MW of new generation capacity in Indiana, of which 3,014 MW, or 56%, would use renewable energy sources like wind, hydroelectric, wood and landfill gas. If constructed this additional capacity would represent a 1,053% increase of renewable energy, putting the state on track to meet its goal of having 10% of its operational generation capacity being renewable energy by 2015. The renewable energy to be added is primarily wind with more than 2,500 MW of new generation, followed by hydroelectric with about 480 MW, wood-fired with 30 MW and landfill-gas-fired with 1.6 MW.

The majority of the proposed new fossil-fuel-fired generation will be coal with approximately 1,238 MW, an increase of 8.1% of the current capacity, followed by natural gas with 1,140 MW, an increase of 18%.
