Power producers in Indiana, The Crossroads of America state, are considering in excess of 3,800 megawatts, representing a 13.75% increase of new and cleaner power generation projects to meet growing needs of the state, and at the same time replace some of the older, less efficient units that will need to be retired. Currently, there are more than 28,000 megawatts of operational generation capacity in Indiana. Companies have recently closed or retired about 1,200 megawatts, with more units scheduled for retirement to follow through 2010.
Indianas new proposed generation includes four coal/petroleum coke integrated gasification combined cycle units (IGCC) that consists of two combustion turbine/generators (CT) and heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) and a steam turbine/generator, two conventional natural gas-fired combined cycle units, a conventional coal/gas-fired unit, a natural gas-fired peaking simple cycle combustion turbine generator, two landfill gas to energy internal combustion engine generators and six wind farms that are primarily in the north/northwestern portion of the state.
