Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--GMR Energy Limited is developing the 300-megawatt (MW) Alaknanda Hydro Electric Power Project in Uttarakhand. The project is part of the prime minister's 50,000-MW hydro power initiative and was awarded by the government of Uttarakhand through a two-stage competitive bidding process.
India-based Hindustan Construction Company (BSE:500185) (HCC) has been awarded a contract valued at $146 million by GMR (Badrinath) Hydro Power Generation Limited to set up the project, which is a run-of-the-river development on the Alaknanda River, at Badrinath in the Chamoli district.
The contract is awarded in two lots: the first involves the main civil works package for coffer dams, a diversion channel, a barrage, power intake, a de-sanding system and a head-race tunnel; the second involves the main civil-works package, powerhouse complex, surge shaft, pressure shaft, pothead yard, tail-race tunnel, and part head-race tunnel. The first lot will be completed within 52 months from the date of issue of a formal notice to proceed, while the second lot will be completed within 54 months.
HCC claims that it has constructed more than 25% of India's hydel power generation capacity, including several projects in the Himalayan region.
The project has completed its environmental studies but is due for its forest clearance. It is assumed that by May 2011, GMR Energy Limited will get the forest clearance, after which the company is planning to open bids for the EPC firm and other related works.
The project is expected to be completed by 2014.
