India's sugar mills are increasingly experiencing debt, massive carryover stocks and low sugar prices, leading the Maharashtra state's sugar commissioner to propose a subsidy for ethanol production from sugarcane, sugar beets and sweet sorghum juice. The commissioner also is proposing loans for new ethanol plants and subsidies for existing sugar factories.
India's ethanol capacity is estimated at 3 billion liters, about 10% of which is used by the potable alcohol sector and 20% by chemical industries. About 1.1 billion liters are blended with petrol. To achieve the government's target of 10% blending by 2022, it will need another 3 billion liters of ethanol.
