Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). During the month of September, the Chemical Processing Industry (CPI) research staff of Industrial Info identified 76 new CPI projects planned to kick off construction in North America between the fourth quarter of 2006 and the second quarter of 2009. These projects combined equal more than $1.1 billion in total capital and maintenance investments, which is a significant portion of the estimated $12.1 billion in total future spending Industrial Info is tracking for the CPI in North America.
Industrial Info also updated the status for 268 previously reported CPI projects during September, of which 114 remained active and were already under construction or planned for construction in a future month. The 114 active projects from this research totaled over $8.4 billion in capital and maintenance project activity, while 122 projects were confirmed to have been previously completed and 29 projects were cancelled and two projects placed on hold. September marks not only the end of the third quarter of the year, but also a time when a large percentage of plant owners are assembling capital and maintenance budgets for the coming year and the large number of confirmed active projects reinforces the CPIs positive momentum moving into 2007.
Among the largest and most significant project updates provided on active projects last month included confirmed plans by Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) (Midland, Michigan) to begin construction early next year for a new vinyl methyl ether (VME) unit to be located at its Taft, Louisiana plant, ultimately replacing a similar unit in operation in Charleston, West Virginia. Another major project confirmed and updated is the planned debottleneck of a purified terephthalic acid (PTA) unit in Wando, South Carolina at the site of BP (NYSE:BP) (Chicago, Illinois). S&B Engineers & Constructors, Limited (Houston, Texas) is providing engineering services for this estimated $70 million project that is planned to begin construction in the summer of 2007.
