Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With the Mid-Atlantic region in its cross hairs, Hurricane Florence was expected to make landfall somewhere on the East Coast on Thursday, potentially impacting a wide range of industrial plant operations being tracked by Industrial Info.

Florence gained momentum over the weekend, becoming a Category 4 hurricane. Packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour as of Monday afternoon, the hurricane could make landfall along the central coast of North Carolina, where there are 198 industrial plants that could be subject to the most intense winds, according to Industrial Info's Disaster Impact Tracker. Among those plants are 16 power generating stations, producing more than 4,404 megawatts of electricity. Major utility companies in the region have activated storm response teams to begin planning for power disruptions, downed transmission lines and potential floods.

Industrial Info's new Disaster Impact Tracker widget can help you monitor weather related events to identify industrial plants in the potential impact path of a storm or natural disaster within your PECWeb Dashboard. Utilize the Current Natural Disasters widget to quickly visualize and assess the specific areas of impact, and link directly to the storm within the Disaster Impact Tracker to identify the plants and units potentially requiring disaster relief equipment and services.

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster ordered the state's coastline to be evacuated starting at noon Tuesday.

Major utility companies in the region have activated storm response teams to begin planning for power disruptions, downed transmission lines and potential floods. Microgrid operators in the region were testing and running exercise cycles on generation equipment. Industrial Info's research team will continue to monitor the storm closely and report which plants have the greatest likelihood of being impacted by the hurricane.

Industrial Info is tracking more than 5,000 operational plants in the Mid-Atlantic Region, which includes the Carolinas, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Also in the region, Industrial Info is tracking more than $31 billion in projects that are under construction. Weather events can affect the construction schedules of projects.

Projects in the region include:
  • The nearly $2.8 billion second phase of the Dulles Metrorail Corridor (Silver Line) Expansion in Arlington, Virginia. Construction of the 11.4-mile extension kicked off in 2014, with planned completion in early 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • Novo Nordisk Pharmaceuticals AS's (NYSE:NVO) (Bagsværd, Denmark) $1.8 billion Insulin Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (DAPI) Plant in Clayton, North Carolina, with a planned completion in third-quarter 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
  • Dominion Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) $1.3 billion Greenwood County Natural Gas-Fired Power Station in Emporia, Virginia. Construction of the 1,588-megawatt facility kicked off in late 2015, with completion planned for the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Meanwhile, two other hurricanes -- Helene and Isaac -- were churning across the Atlantic, but neither were deemed an immediate threat to the U.S.

Also, showers and thunderstorms over the northwestern Caribbean Sea and western Cuba could become a tropical depression later this week as it moves into the southern Gulf of Mexico, something for industrial plants and offshore platforms along the U.S. Gulf Coast to take note of.
