Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Industrial companies are currently developing more than $7.7 billion in major project work in the state of Wisconsin. The majority of these projects are scheduled to begin construction within the next two years. Industrialinfo.com is currently tracking 191 active projects in the state as part of its North American Industrial Database.
The Power Industry dominates 65% of the proposed project spending in the state with close to $5 billion in total investment value (TIV). A good portion of that figure is tied into construction of the Elm Road Generating Station in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, which is scheduled to begin construction this summer pending permit approval. For details see April 8, 2005 news article titled Wisconsin Energy Prepares for Construction of Grassroot Coal-Fired Power Plant in Great Lake Region.
There are 48 Power Industry projects currently being studied in the state. Eleven of the top 20 industrial projects in the state are power plant related, the majority of which are at coal-fired plants. However, there are a couple of large wind power projects active in the state, as well as a major water system upgrade at a nuclear power plant.
After the Power Industry, the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry is coming on strong in Wisconsin, with close to $1.2 billion in spending, across seventeen projects. One of the larger projects in this industry is a new $375 million research and development laboratory at one of the state universities. This project is not scheduled to begin construction until the summer of 2006. The University of Wisconsin system campuses are developing about $876 million across twelve separate industrial projects, including R&D labs and central plant upgrades.
Nineteen percent of the total 191 projects are maintenance related, where planned turnaround, shutdown, or outages are planned to perform maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO). The rest of the projects are capital expenditures, including 67% in the pre-approval stage, and 14% in the advanced approval stage, meaning that they have received capital and permitting approval and have progressed to advanced engineering and construction is immanent.
Wisconsin is the second most industrial state in the Great Lakes Region with 1,164 major operational industrial plants. First is Illinois with 1,397.
