Invenergy Anticipates Startup of $479 Million Power Project North of the Border

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Invenergy LLC (Chicago, Illinois) has completed construction and start-up testing of the $479 million, 635-megawatt (MW) St. Clair Energy Center located in St. Clair Township, Ontario.

Construction of the project began in February 2007 and was completed in the fall of 2008. Invenergy anticipates full commercial operation of the project in February. The project consisted of constructing a 2-on-1 combined-cycle power island equipped with two 170-MW natural-gas-fired GE Power Systems MS7001FA combustion turbines that will feature dry-low NOx burners and inlet chiller systems for the reduction of NOx emissions, two triple pressure duct-fired reheat Foster Wheeler heat recovery steam generators and two 115-MW D11 condensing steam turbine generators also supplied by GE Power Systems.

The output capacity of the new facility will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority under a long-term, clean-energy supply contract. Natural gas will be supplied by Union Gas Distribution Infrastructure, and the power plant will be connected to the grid through existing Hydro One 230-kilovolt circuits L25N and L27N networks that feed into the Ontario electricity market administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator.

Bibb & Associates Incorporated (Lenexa, Kansas) performed the engineering services for the project. Flour Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) acted as general contractor on the project.
