Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Iowa currently has approximately 13,660 megawatts (MW) of operational electrical generation capacity, of which 20.5% is derived from renewable energy sources: hydroelectric, 125 MW; landfill gas, 11 MW; and wind, 2,163 MW. The majority of the balance is made up of fossil fuel, with coal-fired power generation projects totaling 7,165 MW and with gas/oil-fired generation bringing in 3,600 MW. The 581-MW balance of generation is supplied by the 35-year-old Duane Arnold Energy Center (Palo, Iowa), a nuclear facility that is operated and 70% owned by NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of FPL Group (NYSE:FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida). The balance is owned by the Central Iowa Power Cooperative (Cedar Rapids, Iowa), which owns 20%, and the Corn Belt Power Cooperative (Humboldt, Iowa), which owns 10%.

Of the proposed capacity, 78.9% is made up of renewable energy: 2,823 MW from wind, 41 MW from hydroelectricity, 40 MW from synthetic-natural-gas-fired power, 525 MW from coal-fired generation, 245 MW from natural-gas-fired generation, and 4 MW from fuel-oil-fired generation. If all of the renewable generation planned is added, it would increase Iowa's renewable energy capacity to 30% of the total generation.
