Researched by Industrial Info Resources East Asia (Kofu-shi, Japan)--Since Friday's magnitude 9.0 earthquake, which struck off the coast of Miyagi prefecture, the prime concern of Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated (TYO:9501) (TEPCO) (Tokyo) has been its two nuclear power stations located in Fukushima prefecture. Even excluding its two Fukushima stations, TEPCO is faced with a crippled electrical infrastructure. Other power stations affected by the earthquake include the following:
- Futaba, Fukushima, Hirono--natural gas-fired power station units 1, 2 and 4
- Naka, Ibaraki, Hitachinaka--coal-fired power station Unit 1
- Kashima, Ibaraki--oil-fired power station units 2, 3, 5 and 6
- Chiba--LNG-fired combined-cycle power station
- Tokyo--Ohi oil-fired power station units 2 and 3
- Ichihara, Chiba--Goi LNG and oil-fired power station
- Kawasaki, Kanagawa--Higashi Ohgishima LNG-fired power station Unit 1
As of Sunday, all hydropower stations had resumed normal operations. Eight substations were also affected; four of these have resumed operations. TEPCO's other nuclear power station, Kashiwazaki Kariwa, located in Niigata prefecture was unaffected by Friday's quake or any following quakes in the Niigata area. Kashiwazaki Kariwa is still recovering from the Chuetsu earthquake of 2007 that originated in Niigata.
On Friday following the earthquake, nearly 2.97 million households throughout TEPCO's service area were without power. However, by Sunday this figure had dropped to below half a million. TEPCO's service area includes Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures, as well as the Kanto region of Japan, which is comprised of Tokyo, Chiba, Kanagawa, Gunma, Tochigi, Saitama and Ibaraki prefectures. On Sunday evening, the company announced that it had sustained a loss of nearly 25% of its operating capacity. Currently, the most affected prefectures are Ibaraki, Tochigi and Chiba. TEPCO has a current operating capacity of approximately 20 gigawatts, almost half of its full capacity.
