Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The signing ceremony for the civil construction and erection contract for the conventional islands of units 3 and 4 at Tianwan Nuclear Power Station was held in Beijing on August 6, 2012, according to an announcement from CEEC on August 10. The contract is between China Nuclear Power Engineering Company Limited (CNPEC) (Shanghai), the project general contractor and a subsidiary of China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) (Beijing), and Jiangsu Electric Power Construction No.3 Engineering Company (JEPC3) (Zhenjiang, Jiangsu), a subsidiary of China Energy Engineering Corporation (CEEC) (Beijing).

The Tianwan Nuclear Power Station, which is located at Liangyuangang city in the Jiangsu province, currently has two 1,060-megawatt (MW) AES-91 reactors introduced from Russia in operation. According to plans, the plant will have a total of eight units with an installed capacity more than 8,000 MW. The project for units 3 and 4 is another important partnership between China and Russia following their successful cooperation on Phase I of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Station. The project also is a new "starting point" for nuclear development in China following the earthquake and resulting nuclear crisis in northeast Japan in March 2011. On October 11, 2011, Jiangsu Nuclear Power Company Limited (Lianyungang, Jiangsu), the project owner and a subsidiary of CNNC (Beijing), awarded the general contract for units 3 and 4 of Tianwan Nuclear Power Station to the CNPEC.

In early November 2007, China and Russia reached an agreement for the Phase II expansion of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Station, but the final supply contract was not signed until November 2010. According to the contract, JEPC3 will be responsible for all civil work, equipment erection and testing of the conventional islands for units 3 and 4. Construction of the project is expected to kick off in December 2012, and the total construction period will be 62 months.

Among the leaders and representatives who attended the ceremony were Li Xiaoming, the assistant general manager of the CNPEC, and Zhou Xiaoneng, chief economist of the CEEC, according to the CEEC announcement.
