Jordan to Announce Shortlisted Bidders for Independent Wind Power Project

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Jordan imported 97% of its energy in 2008, equivalent to 21% of the country's GDP. The country has almost no indigenous energy resources. To help meet the accelerating growth in demand for electricity, Jordan has set in motion an ambitious plan to reach obtain 7%, or 300 megawatts (MW), of its energy from renewable sources by 2015.

The government of Jordan hopes to add to the country's existing wind energy capacity with the Fujeij Wind Independent Power Project (Fujeij Wind IPP). The Fujeij project will involve construction of an 80- to 90-MW plant (expandable to 200 MW) located on a plateau approximately 150 kilometers south of Amman. The average annual wind speed at 40 meters above ground level is estimated to be 6.7 meters per second. The site is accessible by public road, and the infrastructure is adequate to transport large wind-turbine components to the site.

The government is seeking a company (or companies) to finance, build, own and operate the Fujeij Wind IPP, including all support facilities. The project will provide electricity to the National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) for a period of 20 years.

Maintenance of the windfarm, as well as the operation and maintenance of the substation at the site, will be the responsibility of the successful bidder. The winning bidder will also be responsible for providing and installing the necessary equipment to interface the project with the electrical network at the input terminals of the NEPCO 132-kilovolt breaker that will be installed at the substation.

The shortlist for the prequalified bidders will be announced soon. Firms shortlisted for consulting services were announced last month.
