Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Kalgoorlie Power Systems (KPS) (Perth, Australia) is beginning operations at the 12-megawatt (MW) Garden Well diesel power station to generate electricity for Garden Well Gold Mine, a project developed by Regis Resources Limited (Perth, Australia).
KPS commenced construction on the site in 2011 and recently commissioned power plant operations in 2013. The Garden Well Gold Project is located approximately 350 kilometres northwest of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and has a current mine life of up to nine years.
In 2011, Regis, an Australian mineral exploration and mining company, signed a five-year build, own, operate and maintain (BOOM) contract with KPS, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pacific Energy Limited (Perth, Australia), to develop the Garden Well Power Station to supply electricity to the Garden Well Gold Mine in Western Australia. The Gold Mine was built by Regis in collaboration with Siteforce Australia Pty Limited (Cairns, Queensland) and Burgess BLA (Perth, Australia) in November 2012.
Regis and KPS are planning to expand the capacity of the 12-MW Garden Well power station by installing four Cummins diesel engines, each producing 1 MW of electricity, to increase the output capacity of the plant to 16 MW. The new units will be installed in-line with the existing 12 Cummins generators currently operating at Garden Well. Construction of the expansion will take about five to six months, and the units will be operational by the end of 2013.
In addition to this, Pacific Energy won a seven-plus-year BOOM contract from Sandfire Resources NL (Perth, Australia) for a 20-MW Degrussa Copper Gold power station to supply electricity to the Degrussa U-G Copper/Gold Mine & Processing Plant. This follows other company contract successes, including one from Regis Resources for an 8-MW well power station to facilitate the Moolart Well A-G Gold Mine.
Pacific Energy is now constructing the 44-MW Tropicana Gold Mine Power Station in Western Australia for Anglogold Ashanti Limited (NYSE:AU) (Perth, Australia). The power plant is being built under a BOOM agreement to supply power to the Tropicana A-G Gold Mine and Processing Plant.
