Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Kinder Morgan Energy Partners LP (NYSE:KMP) (Houston, Texas) is continuing to defy critics that say biofuels are not suitable to be transported via product pipelines. The company has just completed a 16-inch-diameter, estimated 2.5-mile pipeline that links Kinder Morgan's unit train-receiving terminal in New Jersey to ethanol storage tankage at terminals in Linden and Carteret, New Jersey.
To support the pipeline, 1 million barrels of storage capacity were added recently, and the terminal now has more than 9 million barrels of storage capacity at the Carteret site, with some 195,000 barrels dedicated to ethanol storage.
Kinder Morgan continues to develop biofuels handling via pipeline and was the first to link terminals in Florida using pipelines that connected the Tampa terminal to the Orlando terminal. The 106-mile, 16-inch pipeline, which was constructed by Kinder Morgan subsidiary Central Florida Pipeline, went into operation in 2008.
In another project, Kinder Morgan and CSX Corporation (NYSE:CSX) (Jacksonville, Florida) have inked a deal with the Tampa Port Authority (Tampa, Florida) to develop a new ethanol distribution hub at the CSX rail yard, which is at Hookers Point, near the port. The $11 million project is to add rail capacity and modify Kinder Morgan's two-mile Inter-Terminal Transfer pipeline, and is expected to be completed by September of this year.
Kinder Morgan also is currently running biofuels from terminals in Portland to Eugene, Oregon. The 115-mile pipeline is moving biodiesel to fuel suppliers through Oregon to meet the state's mandate on biodiesel.
