LNG Projects Move Forward in Italy

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Operations at Adriatic LNG's (Milan, Italy) liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal have been running smoothly since the official inauguration of the facility on October 19, which included Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and the Amir of Quatar Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

The facility is located offshore of Porto Levante, Italy, in the northern Adriatic Sea. The terminal has two modular LNG tanks with storage capacities of 125,000 cubic meters each and has been designed to provide the Italian domestic gas network with a major source of imported energy. Operating at full capacity, the terminal will be able to deliver 8 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year, representing approximately 10% of the country's current natural gas requirements.

Other planned Italian LNG projects include the expansion of the Panigaglia terminal, the new planned facility in Gioia Tauro and Enel SpA's (BIT:ENEL) (Milan) Porto Empedocle facility in Sicily. Enel is currently making a final decision on the selection of the company that will perform engineering, procurement and construction work. Among the companies up for selection are Maire Tecnimont SpA (BIT:MT) (Rome, Italy), Técnicas Reunidas SA (MCE:TRE) (Madrid, Spain) and Techint SA (Milan, Italy). The final selection will be announced in December.
