Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Breakfast cereals manufacturer Malt-O-Meal Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) has begun planning a $136 million expansion of its manufacturing facility in Asheboro, North Carolina. Opened in September 2009, the facility was formerly used by Unilever Bestfoods and was acquired, renovated and expanded by Malt-O-Meal with an investment of approximately $104 million. The plant employs about 200 people and is set to expand to almost 300 by 2015.
Located on a 33-acre site on Bank Street, the plant covers 350,000 square feet, and the expansion will increase its size by approximately 230,000 square feet, which will include the addition of a 150,000-square-foot manufacturing building with two new production lines, associated equipment and machinery, and an 80,000-square-foot warehouse. Groundbreaking is scheduled for early spring 2011, with completion of construction anticipated for the fall. Equipment installation will kick off in early 2012 and will take approximately one year for completion. Malt-O-Meal has selected The Dennis Group (Springfield, Massachusetts) as the primary contractor responsible for project design and construction management.
According to company officials, the expansion is attributed to the growing demand for its products, particularly its Better Oats line, which was launched last spring. The Asheboro facility is already producing a number of the brand's most popular ready-to-eat cereals, including Malt-O-Meal, Frosted Mini Spooners, Malt-O-Meal Frosted Flakes and Better Oats.
