Providence Bay Wind Energy Incorporated (Spring Bay, Ontario), a subsidiary of Schneider Power Incorporated (family owned) (Toronto, Ontario) is scheduled to commence the construction of the first large-scale Ontario wind farm in five years. It is a 15-megawatt (MW) renewable energy wind farm in the Providence Bay/Spring Bay Area, on Manitoulin Island, Ontario and is scheduled to begin construction in the spring of 2005.
Schneider partnered up with AMEC Americas Incorporated (Oakville, Ontario), a division of AMEC plc (London, United Kingdom), Hatch Associates (Sudbury, Ontario), a division of employee-owned Hatch Group (Mississauga, Ontario), to provide engineering services. The equipment vendor for the project will be GE Wind Energy (Tehachapi, California), a subsidiary of GE Energy (Norcross Georgia), a division of General Electric Company (NYSE:GE ) (Fairfield, Connecticut). GE Wind will be providing ten of their 1.5 MW wind turbine/generators for the Providence Bay Wind Farm. The wind farm will sell the power to provincial utilities under long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPA). Commissioning of wind turbine/generators will begin in September 2005, with completion scheduled by December 2005.
