Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Maryland is considered to be one of the nation’s major players in the life science arena and is home to over 370 biopharmaceutical and pharmaceutical companies. Facility locations range from state-of-the-art cGMP manufacturing sites as well as research labs participating in the innovative and diverse development of new drug therapies. As reported in the Pharmaceutical Tracker - Online Database, Maryland currently has 38 active projects with a total investment value (TIV) of $3.5 billion. The bulk of these projects are in the planning stages, accounting for 73% of the state’s current project activity, with 8% undergoing engineering. The remaining 19% of Maryland’s active projects have moved past these phases and are currently under construction.

A recent analysis revealed that out of the 38 active projects, 16 are for grassroot facilities. With these multiple plant openings, job opportunities will inevitably follow. An estimated 32,000 employees are currently employed within the industry in the state. It is anticipated that with the completion of these new site locations, that over 5,000 jobs could be added to the state’s life science workforce.

A $250 million biotech research and development center at John Hopkins’ Bayview campus (Bethesda, Maryland) in Baltimore, Maryland will be completed in the next few months. Also under construction is the $450 million life science and tech center for East Baltimore Development Incorporated (Baltimore, Maryland), which is expected to be complete in late 2008.

All of the current and forecasted activity is contained within a relatively small physical area. Maryland ranks 42nd in the nation in terms of state size, with a total of 14,500 square miles. That area is then proportionately divided fairly evenly with a third made up of marsh land, another third of mountain ranges, and the remaining third containing the many biotech and pharmaceutical companies.
