Metglas Constructing $20 Million Expansion in South Carolina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Metglas Incorporated (Conway, South Carolina), a manufacturer of amorphous metals for transformers, is currently under way with a $20 million construction of the company's transformer metal manufacturing plant in Conway.

Construction consists of expanding the existing building by approximately 18,500 square feet (100 feet x 183 feet) and installing new equipment. Construction started in September 2008 and operations are expected to start by early summer 2009. The building will be completed by January 2009. The expansion will allow the company to relocate existing equipment within the plant, making room for new equipment to be installed and increasing the production supply of Metglas electrical steel for transformers by 50%. This will allow the company to better supply the growing North and South American markets with energy-efficient project solutions. Approximately 25 new jobs will be created over the next three years.

Southern Industrial Constructors (Wilmington, North Carolina) was selected to provide general construction services for the expansion, and Carolina Cooling & Plumbing Incorporated (Surfside Beach, South Carolina) was selected to provide HVAC and plumbing services.

Metglas Incorporated, a subsidiary of Hitachi Metals America Limited (Purchase, New York), manufactures amorphous metal ribbon and components, including amorphous brazing foils, solder foils, brazing alloys, transformer cores, magnetic alloys, surge absorbers and other components. The company currently exports more than 90% of the materials manufactured in the Conway plant to Latin America, the Caribbean, South America, Western Europe, Australia, China and the Pacific Rim.
