Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Central Termoelectrica Nachi-Cocom's natural-gas-fired unit will be brought back online November 2009.
Repairs have been performed on the damaged turbine since March 2009, when the 30-megawatt (MW) unit was brought offline because of a rotor crack. Planned maintenance outages proposed for November 2009 had to be rescheduled and moved forward to match the unplanned outage. According to plant officials, repair works are nearly finished, and the unit will be fully operational in November.
Central Termoelectrica Nachi-Cocom is owned by Comision Federal de Electricidad (CFE) (Mexico City, Mexico) and began commercial operations in 1971. The power plant was initially equipped with two fuel-oil-fired steam turbines and had a total output capacity of 50 MW. In 1987, a Westinghouse W251 B8 gas-fired turbine was commissioned, increasing plant capacity to 80 MW. In 2007, both steam turbines were put in cold-outage status, as they were no longer considered sufficiently efficient. The units are now undergoing decommissioning.
CFE employs more than 80,000 people and has a total power-generating capacity of about 50,000 MW, making it the largest power utility in Mexico. CFE's network contains more than 49,000 kilometers of transmission lines, and the company supplies power to more than 80 million people. Power generating plants controlled by the CFE include a mix of thermal, hydro, nuclear, geothermal and wind-powered plants.
