MGP Ingredients Adding Wheatex Line to Kansas Plant

MGP Ingredients Incorporated (Nasdaq: MGPI) (Atchison, Kansas) in currently de-installing equipment at their wheat proteins and wheat starches plant in Kansas City to make room for a new Wheatex wheat proteins line.

The new equipment for this $3.8 million project will begin arriving on-site to the plant located at 16 Kansas Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas sometime during the first week of June of this year. A complete new line from raw materials storage and handling to processing and packaging will be installed to increase the companies growing demand for products in its specialty ingredients business.

Wheatex is used in a variety of shapes and sizes to improve the textural quality and favor profile of vegetarian end long shelf life meat products.

Along with the new production line, additional pilot scale processing and testing equipment will be installed to support the facilities on-site research and development departments.

Completion of the expansion is expected by March of 2004.

The Kansas City facility was acquired by MGP in February of 2001 and was formally named Kansas City Ingredient Technology who purchased the company from the now bankrupt Thompson Nutritional Technology Inc. in 2000.

For more than half a century, MGP Ingredients Inc has been a recognized leader in the production of natural ingredients derived from wheat. Fully integrated processing facilities are located in Atchison & Pekin, Illinois, and protein and starch mixing plant in Kansas City, Kansas. These facilities provide multi-plant sourcing and are operated 24 hours daily throughout the year.
