Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While large-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export facilities generally get a lot of press because of their size, cost and construction time, several smaller-scale micro LNG plants also are making their way into the U.S. Many of these are to supply domestic markets, unlike their larger counterparts. While most (but not all) of the large-scale export facilities are being constructed along the U.S. Gulf Coast, the geographic range of micro LNG plants in the U.S. is much broader. Industrial Info is tracking $2.76 billion of active small-scale LNG projects in the U.S.

Among the largest micro LNG projects being tracked by Industrial Info is Puget Sound Energy's (Bellevue, Washington) construction of a facility in Tacoma, Washington, at the Port of Tacoma. The facility will process 21 million cubic feet per day of natural gas to produce 250,000 gallons per day of LNG, which will be used to supply shipping company Totem Ocean Trailer Express Incorporated's (TOTE) (Federal Way, Washington) Orca-class cargo ships. Construction on the project began in early 2017 and is expected to be completed in 2019. McDermott International Incorporated (NYSE:MDR) (Houston, Texas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
A peak shaving plant is a special use for LNG, where it is stored onsite at power plants and then used in times of peak demand. In North Carolina, Greenville Utilities Commission (Greenville, North Carolina) is gearing up to begin construction of a peak shaver later this year. The site already has 330,000 gallons of storage capacity, and the facility will be able to produce 30,000 gallons per day of LNG. Construction on the $200 million project is expected to take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another peak shaving project is set to begin in Massachusetts, this time a modernization and refurbishment project. At an existing 372.6-ton-per-day LNG plant in Hopkinton, Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) (Boston, Massachusetts) is preparing to refurbish and modernize the 40-year-old plant with newer equipment. The $200 million project is expected to last about four years. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In Florida, Southern Company (NYSE:SO) (Atlanta, Georgia) is nearing completion of a micro LNG production plant in Jacksonville through its wholly owned subsidiary JAX LNG LLC. Construction began in 2015, with Saulsbury Industries (Houston) providing EPC. The plant will produce 120,000 gallons per day and will have a 2 million-gallon storage tank to exclusively supply two tankers belonging to TOTE. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Maintenance is also on the books for existing peak shaving plants. Williams Companies Incorporated (NYSE:WMB) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) is preparing for a one-week maintenance turnaround at a peak shaver near Plymouth, Washington. The project is expected to take place in the month of September, where inspection and repairs will be made on the 246-ton-per-day plant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
