Minnkota Power Plans Environmental Upgrades to Coal-Fired Power Plant in North Dakota

Minnkota Power Cooperative (Grand Forks, North Dakota) is conducting preliminary design and preparing to spend an estimated $120 million on environmental upgrades to further reduce pollutants at its 734-megawatt Milton Young Power Station (Center, North Dakota). Highlights of the project include a wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubber system scheduled to be installed on the 257-megawatt Unit 01 Babcock & Wilcox boiler by the end of 2011. Plans are in place to start construction in the spring of 2009.

The station’s other unit (477-megawatt Unit 02) has already been equipped with a wet scrubber. However, there are plans to upgrade the scrubber by installing a high-velocity mist eliminator along with a new stack and modifications to boiler components. This project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2009 with completion expected in early 2010. Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing engineering services for the project.
