Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With the rise in renewables by power companies across the U.S., solar power projects are big news. Industrial Info is tracking more than $25.9 billion in solar power projects that are set to begin construction this year. California, Texas and Virginia lead the nation in terms of project value.
Among the major companies to commence solar power projects in 2019 is Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) (Juno Beach, Florida), a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach). The company announced this week that it has commenced construction on 10 solar power plants in Florida, each with a generating capacity of 74.5 megawatts (MW), that are planned to begin operating in early 2020. Among the recently announced projects is the Echo River Solar Energy Center in Suwanee County. The facility will be built on an 800-acre site and will use 330,000 photovoltaic panels. Moss Solar (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) is the general contractor on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $80 million. Several solar projects ranging in generating capacity from 1 MW to 500 MW are in development in California. Among the projects is First Solar Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) 40-MW Little Bear 1 & 2 solar farm near Mendota. The facility will be built on a 630-acre site and will use First Solar's thin film modules. The project is expected to kick off in the third quarter and be completed in the summer of 2020. The project could be followed by the 70-MW Little Bear 3 & 4 project, which would commence later this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Little Bear 1 & 2 and Little Bear 3 & 4.
In Texas, Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) has restarted its East Blackland solar project on a 941-acre site near Pflugerville. The 144-MW facility will use 80,000 to 90,000 of Canadian Solar's MaxPower polycrystalline photovoltaic modules. Construction on the $165 million project is expected to begin in the fourth quarter and take a little more than a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While the Great Lakes isn't the highest-ranking market region in terms of overall solar project value, the area still is home to more than $1.5 billion in planned solar project starts this year, with Wisconsin leading the pack. Among the state's projects is Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) planned Badger Hollow solar farm near Cobb. The 300-MW of solar modules will use a single-axis tracking system. A collector substation and 138-kilovolt transmission line will be built in conjunction with the plant. The projects have a combined TIV of $372 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the solar facility, substation and transmission line.
Among the projects that have kicked off construction this year that are under construction is NextEra Energy's 150-MW solar plant in Quitman, Georgia, in the south of the state. Construction commenced at the beginning of this year and is expected to wrap up by yearend. The facility will use 600,000 photovoltaic solar modules. Renewable energy developer Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $300 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
