Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mosebaer is constructing a 90-megawatt (MW), $130 million power plant in Bara Bangahol, on the Miyar River, near Udaipur, in the district of Lahaul Spiti. The company expects three units of 30 MW each to be commissioned by January 2013.

The power plant will have three hydro turbine/generator sets to supply renewable energy to the local grid. The project comprises a barrage 30 meters high; four gated spillways of design flood 1,500 cubic meters per second; a concrete lined circular diversion tunnel 485 meters long and 7 meters in diameter; a single opening intake structure of design discharge 52.5 cubic meters per second; a concrete-lined headrace tunnel 7.2 kilometers and 4 meters in diameter; a restricted orifice-type surge shaft 50 meters high and 12 meters in diameter; a partially steel-lined pressure shaft 520 meters long and 4 meters in diameter; three underground penstocks with a total length of 146 meters and 2.3 meters in diameter; and a surface powerhouse.

The run-of-the-river scheme entails diverting the flow by constructing a barrage through a water-conduction system to a surface powerhouse near Udaipur town and discharging into the Chenab River. This project also will provide renewable energy, which helps low-carbon economies and development in the remote area.

The location of the project has certain advantages, such as a close proximity to the Northern Market Grid that results in minimal transmission losses. Project alignment along the existing road will reduce the construction of extra roads.
