Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Muller Martini Corporation (Hauppauge, New York) has announced plans to close two of its manufacturing facilities in Newport News, Virginia. The plants make book-binding machinery and other equipment used by publishing companies. Both are scheduled to close by the end of January 2012, which will result in a loss of 160 jobs.
The company cited the closures due to a sharp decline in business that began during the recession but never fully recovered. The demand for print finishing equipment never rebounded. Both plants cover approximately 290,000 square feet and are used for the production of book-binding machinery and mail-room equipment for publishing companies and other firms that produce catalogs, magazines and various other printed material.
Muller Martini Corporation, founded in 1946 in Zofingen, Switzerland, is a privately held company servicing the printing and graphic arts industry. The company constructed the two plants in Virginia around 1973. Another facility was constructed later in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and is listed under the name Muller Martini Mailroom Systems Incorporated. The Allentown operation provides equipment for the Daily Press printing facilities and is expected to remain open. Muller currently employs approximately 4,000 people, with products that include printing presses, bookbinding equipment, and newspaper-inserting systems.
