Neptune to Construct $300 Million Power Conversion Plant in Fall 2005

The Neptune regional transmission system will be using a submarine cable technology. Electricity will move through direct cable lines buried under the sea.

Released Wednesday, April 13, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Neptune Regional Transmission System (RTS) is preparing preliminary design for the construction of the 65-mile transmission line under the Atlantic Ocean that would connect Long Island to power sources in New Jersey, as well as a 600-megawatt (500KV) power conversion station changing alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The purpose of the $300 million plant is to expand and overcome the congested transmission grid.

The Neptune regional transmission system will be using a submarine cable technology. Electricity will move through direct cable lines buried under the sea. They will be safely installed to avoid over-active fishing and boating traffic. Once laid, the cable lines will sink into the seabed and require no maintenance.

A power conversion plant will be built near River Road in Sayreville, New Jersey, and will be connected by cable lines to a similar plant in Long Island, New York. A station will change the alternating current of the electric grid into direct current that the cable line is designed to carry, and a station at the other end will change it back to alternating current. Both stations will consist of switchyards, transformers, converters, and auxiliary equipment.

Siemens Westinghouse Electric Corporation (Orlando, Florida) received the contract to be the turn-key contractor for the project.

Neptune Regional Transmission System is owned by Atlantic Energy Partners LLC, along with four other firms: Cianbro Corporation (Pittsfield, Maine), which provides construction services in heavy industrial business, power plants, and transmission construction; CTSBM Investments LLC (Portland, Maine); ESAI Energy Ventures (Wakefield, Massachusetts); Standard Energy Development Incorporated (Halifax, Nova Scotia); and Boundless Energy LLC (Plainville, Connecticut).
