Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The fuel cost of the legendary "blue haze" and "throbbing hum" put out by private generator sets in Nigeria's cities, towns and villages has now been quantified by the country's Community Research and Development Center (CREDC). Godfrey Ogbemudia, the program director for CREDC, said $4.8 billion is spent annually on diesel and gasoline for the private generators. This figure equals the federal government's budget for capital expenditures in 2009 for the 36 states in the Nigerian federation.

Ogbemudia was speaking in Benin City, Edo state, at the official launch of the Nigerian Renewable Energy for All (Nigeria-REAP) project.

In 2013, it was forecast that sales of diesel generator sets could represent revenues of $41.2 billion by 2018.

In spite of the various government policies to revive the energy sector, nothing has really been achieved. Many Nigerians get as little as four hours' electricity supply per day, hence the need for Nigerians to embrace solar energy as a viable source of power, Ogbemudia said. CREDC has been playing a key role in the deployment of renewable energy to rural communities since 2006.

The Nigeria-REAP solar project is aimed at improving access to sustainable and uninterrupted renewable energy. Schneider Electric (OTC:SBGSF) (Paris, France) is collaborating in the scheme, which is directed at individual homes and corporate organizations.

"With renewable energy, there are no electricity bills; the system can be upgraded to meet your increasing energy demand with no pollution or maintenance cost," Ogbemudia said.

CREDC, with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), has developed and tested a wide range of renewable energy technologies.
