Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nippon Sharyo U.S.A. Incorporated (Arlington Heights, Illinois), the U.S. subsidiary of Japanese company Nippon Sharyo Limited (TYO:7102) (Nagoya, Japan), plans to construct a $35 million rail car manufacturing plant in Rochelle, Illinois.
Design is currently under way for a 400,000-square-foot building that will include production equipment and supporting equipment to produce 120 passenger rail cars annually. The initial market will be for suburban commuter vehicles and inter-city passenger cars.
Groundbreaking occurred last month, and the building construction is anticipated to begin in December. Overall completion for the new plant is anticipated by the summer of 2012. Approximately 250 new jobs will be created near the end of 2013. The new plant will also serve as the company's U.S headquarters. Nippon meets the Federal Railroad Administration's "Made in America" requirements, which will allow the company to compete for contracts that receive Federal Transit Administration funding.
Kajima Building & Design Group (Atlanta, Georgia) was selected to provide engineering and construction services for the new plant.
Nippon Sharyo U.S.A. was founded in 1982 and consists of annual revenues estimated to be between $5 million and $10 million. The company currently employs approximately 40 people. Nippon Sharyo U.S.A. has delivered an aggregate of 886 passenger rail cars to the U.S. market since the early 1980s.
