Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). The North American Cement Sector is experiencing strong development activity for capital and maintenance spending projects. Currently, Industrial Info is tracking 230 active capital and maintenance projects in North America (Canada, Mexico and U.S.), totaling more than $8 billion. The Midwest Region leads all regions in the cement sector’s active project spending with 27 projects totaling $1.4 billion. Following the Midwest Region, the Southwest, Southeast and Rocky Mountain regions each have in excess of $1 billion in active cement sector project activity.

About 33% of the spending is tied up in projects that are currently under construction. This includes the massive $905 million grassroot cement plant, quarry and harbor being constructed by Holcim in Bloomsdale, Missouri. TXI also has a large modernization under construction in Oro Grande, California. Zachry Construction Company (San Antonio, Texas) is performing construction for both of these projects. The remaining projects are in the planning or engineering stages and are scheduled to start construction within the next two years.

About half of the projects representing $303 million are maintenance projects scheduled during planned annual maintenance shutdowns. Most of the Winter 2007 annual planned maintenance shutdowns have been performed and cement producers are turning their attention to next year’s shutdowns. Typical work performed during cement plant shutdowns includes kiln shell repair, refractory/brick replacement, liner and filter replacements, conveyors and material handling equipment repairs, raw and finish mill overhaul, and motor work.
