Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--McGuire Nuclear Station, located in Huntersville, North Carolina, shut down its 1,129-megawatt (MW) Unit 1 on the night of Friday, February 6, after discovering a pressurizer leak in a manway cover. The station is owned by Duke Energy (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina).
Officials said that they knew about the leak, but did not see a need to make repairs sooner, because it had no effect on the operation of the unit. They decided to bring the unit down only because the leakage was worsening. Evaluations and some assessments have been made, but the investigation and repairs are in progress.
Officials expect to return the unit online Thursday morning, February 12, if there are no delays.
McGuire Nuclear plant has two generating units with a combined capacity of 2,258 MW when at full load. Unit 2 will continue to generate at full capacity.
